- improvement in technical and practical areas
- further in-depth assignment specific image research and development ideas
- binding and printing is much clearer
- prints are labelled consistently
I need to think about the presentation of my prints and how assignment document and prints match. My prints aren't strong enough. I need to visit a local print lab and see how professional photographers get their work printed, get some of my work printed to compare in order to make an informed decision moving forward.
I also need to experiment and take more test shots with regard to white balance.
Photo's to consider re-shooting:
Image 11 - coffee shop - images 12 & 13 don't fit too well with the set so may shoot them again.

This image of another view of the interior again makes for a more interesting photo, there is evidence of people being sat at the little brown sofa not long ago with the hot chocolate glasses and coffee cups are still on the table, the attention is then drawn into the image to the back of the cafe where an unidentifiable person sits, I waited until someone sat on the tables in the background as I much prefer an image with some sort of human factor, without which an image can feel flat. I feel that the addition of the re-shot image 11 and 13, that image 12 sits a little better and I was unable to re-shoot this image.
Blog: positive feedback from my tutor, must continue with reflections, practicing with evidence on blog, examples of photographers I've researched, and to discuss images uploaded from the source page and demonstrate critical analysis.
Critical analysis is probably one of the things I find most difficult, it's hard to comment on professionals in a critical way, although reading 'criticising photographs' describes the method quite well and what I need to consider to get started, basically I need to start verbalising my opinion, once I've decided what it is.
I have also been researching toward the end of a section and when preparing for assignment, which is still good and valuable but my tutor suggests that my work would benefit from advance research in preparation for the work in the section and at the beginning, map out potential ideas and plans and hw I might use the exercises to practice these, then conduct more targeted research that's relevant to the work I'm doing and the subjects I might choose for my assignment.
Look up: Candida Hofer - interiors of historical/cultural spaces (re my cathedral images)
Suggested reading/viewing:
Dawn Woolley's post on the OCA website re 'decoding advertising imagery', an example of ow to break down an image, pickout visual clues and analyse it.
Find examples of photographic projects or photo essays from magazines that deal with similar subjects or messages and maybe take a closer look at the images and techniques that could potentially help in my approach to assignment 4.
Photographers to review:
Tina Barney, Alec Soth, Martin Parr - all produce work that centres on people's relationships to space and place at a particular time or setting.
Paul Strand, Alexander Rodchenko - space, light and abstract
Phillip Lorca di Cardia, Hannah Starkey, Kate Peters - colour atmosphere and place
Remember:
- Framing - angles/position.....move
- handling - careful not to shake
- take time over photoshoots
- experiment with white balance
Consider the distance between the photographer and subject and how it changes the emphasis of the image and the message - discuss in reflections.
